Bye-Bye Beige, Hello Dopamine Decor!

The last few years have seen an increase in beige home-decor, with limited splashes of colour and an uptake in monochrome finishes. There has also been the debate of the ‘Beige Baby’ - in which nurseries were being decorated in muted tones, not the traditional bust of rainbow we are used to seeing in these rooms. However, recently we are starting to see pops of colour sneaking through the beige curtain.

At O’Reilly’s, we favour colour and embellishing a space, and in our October Design Sale, we have two lots that would no doubt brighten any room. Lot 262 features two small glass Maltese Madina bud vases. These vases are coloured with blue, green, and gold, making it appear as there is a universe within each one. Mdina Glass was set up in Malta in 1968 by Michael Harris, a British glasswork lecturer from the Royal College of Art, along with another R.C.A. colleague Eric Dobson. Part of Harris' deal to set up his business on the island was that he had to teach his was of glassblowing to anyone who was eager to learn - which he did happily. In fact, the company today is still run by the family of his first student, Joseph Said. Mdina glass pieces are each unique with natural forms; different to mass produced goods we often find today.

Lot 263 is another lot that would brighten even the smallest space. This pink vase by Sicas Sesto Fiorentino has a gold lustre and ridged pattern that gives it an almost magical under-the-sea effect, as though it is a large shell that has been taken from the ocean. This mid-century vase would be the perfect piece for anyone trying to bring a retro look to their 21st century home.

Both of these lots have a lot of character and would be stand out pieces in any home or even office-space! Both are mid-century pieces bringing an edge that modern ceramics and glasswork cannot always convey.
