There has been a recent uptake of interest in landscapes at auction here at O’Reilly’s. Buyers are particularly interested in views they can relate to and have fond memories of such as Ireland’s Eye in Howth or views of Connemara. Also popular are landscapes of far off places that bring people back to their travels and remind them of sun, sea and sand, bringing the warmth of summer within a frame. In this auction, we have a selection of landscapes to fit a variety of tastes.
We have a grand total of five paintings by Douglas Alexander RHA (1871 - 1945) in our August 27th Auction. The paintings are not titled but they all show views of the West of Ireland which was Alexander’s speciality and are all very finely painted watercolours. Though he was a Limerick man, Alexander fell in love with the rugged landscape of Connema, and his most notable views are of this With dark frames emphasising the soft vista within, these paintings would make a wonderful set together or individuals as a stand alone piece. This is definitely the auction for those looking to start their collection.
If you are looking for a sunnier view perhaps, we have a selection of works by more modern Irish artists such as Susan Webb, Paddy Gallagher, John Keating, and Norman Teeling to name but a few! These works cover notable Irish locations, for example a wonderful view of Garron Point in Antrim by George Gillespie (1924 - 1995), along with summery continental scenes like John Keating’s Venetian terrace. If a landscape is what you are looking for, then the O’Reilly’s August auction is definitely the place to look!
