Described as an “emerald by day, and ruby by night,” Alexandrite is a very rare, colour-changing gem. Here’s some more interesting information about the chameleon-like stone…
- Provenance: First discovered in Russia’s Ural Mountains, today Alexandrite can also be found in Sri Lanka, East Africa and Brazil. It is so rare that in its best form, it can command a higher price than diamonds of the same size.
- Colours: Alexandrite changes colours depending on the light source. The best examples alternated between bottle green and a rich, purple red.
- Name: The gem was named after Russia’s Czar Alexander II.
- Birthstone & Anniversary: Alexandrite is one of June’s birthstones and the gem to celebrate 55th wedding anniversaries.
